MANAGING GROWTH AND
PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE
A lot of folks throw around the term smart growth without really defining what it means or what it looks like. In the architectural profession, I have worked for years with developers, governments, clients, and citizens to find common ground that benefits all of us and manages growth. My experience has led me to the conclusion that in order to protect the small town we love and its heritage, we need clarity, flexibility, innovation, and fair standards in our development code and plans. We need citizens engaged and aware of how our development code works, bringing their good ideas to the table proactively.
We also need planning commissioners and board members that are aware of their duties and rights. As a licensed design professional, I know how to navigate these complicated legal, development, and zoning issues to challenge developers at a higher level. Over the past seven years I have fought to protect our town from bad development by improving our code. I believe our board is equipped with the tools on hand if they so choose to use them for the public benefit. I will certainly wield them in the defense of our small town.
I want to work with our existing residents and businesses to improve their properties without onerous regulation. We should challenge and work with new developers that come to Berthoud and demand a higher standard of architecture, amenities, infrastructure, and transit options for those that do want to build here. Most of all, we need to consider public input throughout the process.
Serving on the Town of Berthoud Planning Commission, the 2021 Berthoud Comprehensive Plan Select Committee, and the town board, I believe proactive actions and intervention before development occurs is the best way to maintain the agricultural and historic, small-town character of Berthoud.
